Its Fishmas day! Time to head to the stream at 6 am to get a good spot to throw in a line at 8 am! Your bundled up and ready to get tangles, snags and snares. And a lot of fish! Nothing like fresh fish to throw on a piping hot grill or bake in the oven! But there is always the step you don’t see. After the picture-taking and the fish stories naturally. How to Clean Trout?
Recently I have been asked a few questions on how to clean a trout. Its pretty simple but I thought it would be pretty nice to have a few pictures on the Hubs making quick work of it! I mean, this man is one heck of a cook and naturally he would know how to clean trout. The fact that he worked on a fishing carter in the south would have nothing to do with it at all! Haha.
The hardest part of the whole process is keeping a grip on the sucker!! But hold on the best you can without cutting up your hand! And a good, sharp fillet knife is a definite must!

Here is a step by step picture on where to get started. Begin right in front of the anal fin. The farthest fin on the bottom of the trout. You will insert the tip of the knife into the anus and slice from there to the bottom of the jaw. Don’t insert the knife too far in as you do not want to cut up the organs and make complete mess.
One of the little tips the Hubs showed me was to clip with the tip of the knife right behind the bottom jaw. Right behind the bony part. This helps pull out the gills very easily once you nick that little piece holding them in. Once you have done that, pull out all of the insides. Even when I was a kid I always had to figure out what organ was what! Everything is different!
Once you have out all of the innards, the only thing you have left is the blood vein. It runs up the spine and just has a thin membrane that needs to be cleaned out. Just run your thumb nail under the membrane and slide up. There will still be some blood on the spine.
Just remedy that by running the trout under cold water and rubbing lightly. And there you have it! Clean Trout!
Freeze or Grill
Now if you want to freeze it just as is. That is totally fine. Some people such as my Hubs…Well he doesn’t like freezing fish. Says it gets too mushy. So chop off the head, fins and tail. The out line above is what you have left. Throw some butter on some foil, season the inside of the trout with some lemon pepper, put the trout in the grill and cook away! When its done the skin will stick to the foil a bit which helps for easier eating! Just watch the bones!!
Hopefully this has been a quick help on how to clean trout!! Some people will fillet them and some with just cut it in half from there. This is just as quick and easy!
